Description:
Great choral music has a way of reminding us that even when our experiences are different, there is still much that we share. Join Queen City Singers, Queen City Performing Arts’ newest chamber choir, for their inaugural concert, Common Ground. Under the direction of Donna Hill, with John Herrick as collaborative pianist, this ensemble brings together familiar voices from across Charlotte’s choral community for an afternoon of music exploring hope, compassion, resilience, and connection.
The program includes selections from Karl Jenkins’ powerful The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace, alongside Eric Whitacre’s Sing Gently, Stephen Paulus’ The Road Home, and Simon & Garfunkel’s beloved Bridge Over Troubled Water. Join the Women’s Chorus of Charlotte for Into Fire, a powerful and wide-ranging concert exploring courage, resilience, and what happens when we choose to act rather than stand by. And when we say wide-ranging, we mean it. From the breathtaking intensity of Mozart’s Dies Irae to the irresistible groove of The Trammps’ Disco Inferno, Into Firemoves between the profound and the playful, with music including Joan Szymko’s Malala, Adele’s Set Fire to the Rain, and Burn from Hamilton.
Some of these songs honor people who have found extraordinary courage when the moment demanded it. Others explore the fires we survive, the ones we start, and the ones that simply make us want to get up and dance. Handel’s Messiah is one of the most enduring works in the choral repertoire, first performed in Dublin in 1742.
Rather than telling a single narrative, it reflects on the life of Christ through a series of texts drawn from scripture, moving from prophecy and birth to sacrifice and redemption. Its choruses, arias, and orchestral writing are direct and expressive, which has helped it remain accessible to audiences for centuries. The “Hallelujah” chorus is among the most recognized moments in all of classical music, but the power of Messiah comes just as much from its quieter, more reflective passages.
After an overwhelmingly positive response last season, we are pleased to bring Messiah back this year. It has long been associated with the holiday season, offering a chance for audiences and performers to come together around music that feels both familiar and meaningful. Whether hearing it for the first time or returning to a yearly tradition, Messiah continues to connect with listeners in a direct and lasting way.

Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terezín presents Verdi’s Requiem within the extraordinary true story of Jewish prisoners in the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp who performed the work as an act of spiritual resistance. Under the leadership of conductor Rafael Schächter, the prisoners sang Verdi’s powerful score in defiance of Nazi oppression. Created by Maestro Murry Sidlin, this concert-drama combines the Requiem with survivor testimony, historical footage, and spoken narrative to honor courage, dignity, and the enduring power of music.

Doors open at 6:00 PM — first-time visitors are encouraged to arrive a little early.

Come sing with us! The Queen Charlotte Chorus is looking for women of all ages who love to sing. We rehearse every Tuesday evening from 6:30 - 9:00pm. All of our rehearsals are open to visitors. No music training is required - you just need to be able to carry a tune! We perform for the public regularly and compete in a five-state region every spring as part of Sweet Adelines International.
Over 30,000 women all over the world have discovered the joy of a cappella singing through Sweet Adelines. You may choose to audition after four visits. The audition song is from our current repertoire, so you will already have one song under your belt! Our members hail from all over the Charlotte region - some of us drive over an hour to get to rehearsal each week!
